I absolutely LOVE hot chocolate, and a homemade hot chocolate recipe is so much better than a powder you mix with either water or milk. Here’s a recipe I found that I think is really good.

The serving size is a little off. It claims it’s for 4 servings but I cut the recipe in half and it was only enough for 2 very small cups. I would say instead of 4 it serves 3 small to regular size mugs.
Ingredients
- ¾ cups of water
- 3 Tbsp. of cocoa powder
- 3 cups of milk
- 170g of chocolate
- 3 Tbsp. of sugar
- Whip cream (optional)
- Marshmallows (optional)
Directions
The first thing I did was measure out all my ingredients because the recipe does go pretty fast and I don’t want to be rushing to measure everything out at the time I need it. Bring your water to a boil then whisk in your cocoa powder. Add in your milk and return to a simmer. Milk likes to burn so don’t put your burner on high while waiting for it to simmer. Medium to medium high is fine. Once the mixture is simmering again, whisk in sugar and chocolate then remove from heat. Serve in your favorite mug and top your choice of whip cream, and/or marshmallows, and dust with cocoa powder.
My mugs of choice are ones my boyfriend and I got while on trips to the mountains here in Alberta.
What do you like to top your hot chocolate with? My first choice would be real whip cream, however, that’s not usually something you have on hand. I don’t usually have whip cream in a can either but I bough some for this occasion. I always have marshmallow though.
Thank you so much for reading this blog post. Have a great day and enjoy your homemade hot chocolate.
