Edmonton Ice Castles

Edmonton Ice Castles

One of the things on my winter to do list post was to go to the Edmonton Ice Castles in Hawrelak Park. I went to them last year for the first time and thought they were incredible so I knew I would have to go this year too.

The Edmonton Ice Castles are located in Hawrelak Park. This is actually a park that my boyfriend Johnny and I like to go pretty often anyway. An interesting facts about the ice castles is they are hand build using only icicles and water which I find pretty amazing considering how beautiful and huge these things are!

Johnny and I had booked out tickets a few days in advance and didn’t think to look at the weather so the day we went was about -23C not including the wind chill! We used up some of our hand warmers and we also had body warmers and toes warmers. I really suggest getting some toe warmers if you live somewhere cold and your planning on being outside because my toes were warm the entire time I was there! The good part about it being so cold when we went is that there were far less people than last year when we went on a warmer day so you really got to take your time and take some great pictures. Also, this year when went in the evening so we got to see the different colored lights inside and behind the ice that make it look pretty and lit up.

Some things I don’t think I will ever understand is that they have a fountain going that doesn’t freeze and a fire going to warm yourself that doesn’t melt the ice around it. These are just some cool features that I think really draw you to the place and make you question how they do it all because I know I am!

Some other cool things they have is a couple little ice slides you can go down. Next year I will definitely take some snow pants so I can really slide down them. There was also a large chair build out of ice. It has a little blanket on it but trust me it didn’t  help the coldness haha

If your interested in going to the Ice Castles they are still open for at least another week so get your tickets here! I promise it’s worth it. It’s nice to have something to look forward to in the crazy cold winters here in Canada because I’ll be honest most of the time I don’t want to leave the house because it’s just that cold! A way to keep yourself warm at the Edmonton ice castles is with a hot drink. I made a blog post with a list of the best coffee shops in Edmonton for you.
