I recently took another trip to Banff National Park Alberta and decided to go for a hike on Grassi Lakes Trail in Kananaskis. In this post I will let you know all about this trail and if it’s worth your time to take the hike.

Grassi Lakes Trail and Length
The Grassi Lakes Trail is a loop hike. You can go up one way and come down the other. My suggestion would be to go to the left first because it’s harder and there’s rocks and rocks formed into stairs on this side. That’s why on the way back it’s a wide flat trail that’s easy to walk down. I think it’s meant for small vehicles to drive on so it’s much easier to walk on which is nice when you’re already tired from the hike. Make sure you step off the trail and go check out the waterfall as well before the stairs on the way up.
The length of this trail is about 4.3km total. Overall it only took us a couple hours to complete with a quick stop at the top to enjoy the lakes. Something else to keep in mind is there isn’t a lot of parking here so make sure to show up early because you aren’t aloud to park on the road at this spot; only in the parking spaces provided.
Animals and Lakes
Once we arrived at the Grassi Lakes Trail in Kananaskis we noticed a sign that was dated a few weeks before saying there were bears in the area. I thought this was a little odd and in no way thought we would see any bears because this is slightly high traffic trail especially on the weekend. However, not even 10 minutes into the hike and we see 2 black bear cubs just off the trail. If you’re going to see some bears it better to see black over brown but given the fact that we only saw cubs and not the mother bear we left that area pretty quickly. Other than the bears the only other animal I saw on this hike was a chipmunk.
At the top of this trail you’ll find two gorgeous lakes. The lakes have gorgeous green and blue colors that you can see right through to the bottom of the lake. The views are gorgeous with the view of mountains in the back. There were also rock climbers on the mountain the day we hiked up the Grassi Lakes Trail which was cool to see.
Grassi Lakes Trail Overall
Overall Grassi Lakes Trail is a great hike that I would for sure recommend. The only downside to this hike is there was a little part in the view that had power lines. Obviously in nature you would prefer to not see that but the hike was so great that it outweighs that. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay near this hike I would recommend Brewster’s Mountain Lodge (check out the my review here) which I’ve stayed at once the Windtower Lodge and Suites in Canmore. I’ve stayed there a few times and I loved it. I will definitely stay there again in the future.
