Author

Nicola Yoon has written both this book and the Sun Is Also A Star. Both books were written so well and I absolutely adored them. Nicola has a way of writing that intrigues you into wanting more. I also love that I always learn something from her books. She must do lots of research to include in her books. I love that I can always learn something new by reading non-fiction instead of fiction. It’s something a little more than exciting just a regular fiction novel.

Plot

This book focused is around the character Maddy who hasn’t left her house since she was a baby because she has SCID. SCID stands for severe combined immunodeficiency. This basically just means that if she leaves the house she could die. Therefore she lives in this house with air that’s been cycled through to clean it. Everyone who comes in (only her mom and nurse) have to be cleaned so they don’t infect her with anything that could hurt her. Maddy’s mother found out about the disease after her husband and son died because Maddy was constantly sick. Maddy was always in and out of the hospital until she was diagnosed.

All this is fine by Maddy, it’s all she really knows. She throws herself into her books and her school work and shes lives the life she can. All this is fine until Olly moves in next door. Maddy is so intrigued by Olly and Olly feels the same way. But what will Maddy do? She can’t have a real relationship. She can’t even leave her house.

Pick up this book to see how Maddy deals with this new obstacle in her sick life. You can get it on Amazon here.

Movie

This book was actually also made into a movie. I think it was done wonderfully. They really stayed true to the book which I loved and is not always done. I’m not a fan of movies changing amazing books so they did well to keep this one true to the book. However, I would still suggest to read the book first then watch the movie. Books are always better than movies, it’s just nice to really see the characters you’re invested in come to life in a movie after you’ve read the book. You can get the movie on Amazon here.

Quotes

This book has some great quotes so I thought I would list a few of my favorites below to get you excited to read the book.

“Everything’s a risk. Not doing anything is a risk. It’s up to you.”

“Life is a gift. Don’t forget to live it.”

“Spoiler alert: Love is worth everything. Everything.”

“You can do every goddamn thing right, and your life can still turn to shit.”

“Maybe growing up means disappointing the people we love.”

“Just because you can’t experience everything doesn’t mean you shouldn’t experience anything.”

“You’re not living if you’re not regretting.”

“I was happy before I met him. But I’m alive now, and those are not the same thing.”

And there is my Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon book review. I would definitely recommend reading this book. Nicola Yoon is an amazing writer and I would suggest reading her books.

  1. I had to read the book when I was in college, and I gotta say that I wasn’t the biggest fan of the book? Maybe it was because I had to dissect it, or maybe because I felt like there wasn’t thattt much character development and dialogue that I wanted? Because of that, I didn’t end up watching the movie. I’m glad to hear that you thought that they did a good job with the movie! Great post xx
