Author

The author of the One Of Us Is Lying book is Karen M. McManus. I only discovered Karen’s books this year and shes quickly become one of my all time favorite authors. I immediately read the second book in this book series called One Of Us Is Next and just ordered her book The Cousins. My favorite part of Karen’s books is that they’re young adult mystery thrillers that alway keep you guessing. I love that I can read a book and not know how it’s going to turn out which Karen is really good at accomplishing.

Plot

The One Of Us Is Lying book starts out with five students getting detention. Their names are Simon, Bronwyn, Nate, Cooper, and Addy. All five of these students however, think someone is playing a prank on them and that they don’t deserve to be in detention. Before detention is over Simon dies from a peanut allergic reaction. The police end up investigating the remaining four students thinking it must be one of them who’s caused his allergic reaction because Simon was always so careful.

The rest of One Of Us Is Lying goes through trying to find out who killed Simon as well as uncovering secrets about all five of the students involved that they never wanted to come out. I loved that there was so much to what happens in this book. It’s also not easily guessed at what happens in the end of the book which is great. There is also a second book in this series called One Of Us Is Next that you really should read as well.

Quotes

“A sex tape. A pregnancy scare. Two cheating scandals. And that’s just this week’s update. If all you knew of Bayview High was Simon Keller’s gossip app, you’d wonder how anyone found time to go to class.”

“I don’t know why it’s so hard for people to admit that sometime they’re just assholes who screw up because they don’t expect to get caught.”

“I know what it’s like to tell yourself a lie so often that it becomes the truth.”

“I guess we’re almost friends now, or as friendly as you can get when you’re not one hundred percent sure the other person isn’t framing you for murder.”

“I want to kiss her more than I want air.”

“You find out who your real friends are when stuff like this happens. Turns out I didn’t have any…”

“That’s the kind of person you can get away with killing: someone everybody else wants dead.”

“These murder club meetings are becoming a regular thing. We need a new name, though.”

“It concerns me you’re avoiding a promise not to murder me.”

“Are we friends, or just a couple of people without better options?”

“Plenty of people get cheated on and don’t lose their minds. Take me, for example. I threw a vase at Charlie’s head and moved on. That’s a normal reaction.”

And that is my One Of Us Is Lying book review. Overall I absolutely loved this book and I could not recommend reading One Of Us Is Lying anymore or even any book written by Karen M. McManus. If you read this book let me know what you think of it in the comments.
